Getting game ready

Cricket is a team sport but it is also about personal performance. There are four key areas for each of us to focus on to become better cricketers.

1. Mental toughness - the ability to remain focused and concentrate in spite of the tough situations on field. It is important for us to have these internal conversations with ourselves that are positive.

2. Fitness - personal fitness is key. Daily personal exercise is important to building strength, endurance, flexibility and your ability to think. Fitness works hand in hand with mental toughness. When fatigue steps in our brains look for ways out and that's when failure becomes an option.

Individually, make time to run or ride or walk at least three times a week. Do daily push-ups, sit-ups. Jumping rope builds agility. Stretching is hugely important. It decreases your chance of injury. If our fitness improves our game will improve, guaranteed.

3. Skills development - we each need to improve both our knowledge of the game and our ability to play the various aspects of the game. Fielding practice is essential. Batting practice is essential, bowling is essential. Team practice is of supreme importance. It allows us to focus as a group on our weak areas and find ways to improve them. Learning the fundamentals of the game is important as well. We each need to understand and seek out information on field positions, no-balls, LBW, various ways one can get out, etc.

4. Food and Nutrition - hugely important, as it is directly related to how our bodies perform in a game. We need to consume more carbohydrates the night before a game, a process called Carb Loading, as well as to eat the day off the game. Food gives us the energy to last. We have to see ourselves as athletes and fuel our bodies accordingly.

Ideally, meals consumed during a cricket match should provide carbohydrate to keep blood glucose levels topped up, provide a variety of other nutrients such as protein, vitamins and minerals, be low in fat and easy to digest.  Good examples include, sandwiches and rolls with lean meat, low fat cheese and salad, home made pizza, pasta dishes, fruit salad, low fat muffins, yoghurt and fruit.

Combating dehydration is an important issue, and cricketers should drink at least 250-500 ml of fluid at each drink break to replace sweat losses on hot days.  For active players such as batsmen, bowlers and the wicket-keeper, the provision of carbohydrate in these drinks may of additional benefit.

Suggested foods to consume:
Bananas, oranges, - foods high in potassium
Bagels, breads, pasta - foods high in carbohydrates,
Beans, meat, - foods high in protein
Cereals, fruit, vegetables, low fat dairy products and lean meat
Water, water, water
